The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is considering an update to its mask guidance to recommend the highly protective N95 or KN95 masks worn by health-care personnel.
With the highly transmissible omicron variant spurring record levels of infections and hospitalizations the CDC is considering the update due to an increase in the number of omicron related coronavirus cases.
N95 masks are approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and are designed to filter up to 95 percent of particles, according to the CDC.
Some state and local officials have also recently encouraged people to upgrade their masks.
