On Saturday, May 16, 2026, IAM District 70 hosted a powerful Flags of Freedom dedication ceremony with United Way of the Plains to honor the service and sacrifice of America’s veterans and active military members. Community members, union brothers and sisters, veterans, and supporters gathered together in a moving display of patriotism and remembrance.
The Flags of Freedom display featured hundreds of American flags standing proudly outside District 70, each one representing a hero, a family member, or a loved one who served our country. The event served as both a tribute and a reminder of the freedoms Americans enjoy because of the brave men and women who answered the call to serve.
Speakers at the dedication included IAM Business Representative Clint Shockley, a United States Navy veteran, and District 70 Veterans Committee Chair Patrick Garcia, a United States Marine Corps veteran. Both men delivered heartfelt remarks about the meaning behind the flags and the sacrifices made by those who wore the uniform.
Shockley spoke about the importance of never forgetting the cost of freedom and recognizing the dedication of veterans who defended the nation at home and abroad. Garcia reflected on the bond shared by service members and the responsibility communities have to support veterans long after their service ends.
Together, their messages highlighted unity, service, sacrifice, and gratitude. Attendees were reminded that every flag carried a story and represented courage, commitment, and love of country.
The Flags of Freedom initiative also serves a greater purpose beyond the display itself. Funds raised through flag sponsorships help provide free rides for local veterans, ensuring they can get to medical appointments, services, and other important destinations throughout the community. The program continues to make a direct impact on the lives of veterans across the Wichita area.
The dedication ceremony stood as a meaningful kickoff to Memorial Day observances and reflected IAM District 70’s ongoing commitment to supporting veterans and honoring those who have served.
